Looking for a new market? Where should I focus my exports?

When you’ve approached the stage where your business is ready to start exporting, one of the first questions that you may ask is ‘Where should I focus my exports?’ We have crafted this blog post to highlight some of the amazing resources that are available for both new & existing exporters, many of whom are looking for new food export markets around the world.

Quality is key

The great news is that food exports from Great Britain are renowned for their high quality, which has led to businesses and importers throughout the world seeking new food imports from British based businesses.

A gap in the market, and a £2.9 billion opportunity

Despite the huge opportunity that exporting represents, 80% of food manufacturers in the UK do not currently export. DEFRA (Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs) and the DIT (Department for International Trade) are looking to remedy this by providing businesses of all shapes and sizes with useful tools and support, much of which is available for free online.

In October 2016 the Government unveiled its plan for growing the value of British exports by an additional £2.9 billion by 2020. The UK Food and Drink International Action Plan 2016-2020, compiled by DEFRA and the DIT, sets out the Government’s main objectives when it comes to helping both first time and experienced exporters.

As well as producing the action plan, which is full of helpful information for both seasoned and novice exporters, the Government has also launched https://www.exportingisgreat.gov.uk, a great tool for finding export opportunities worldwide.

Working together to find new markets

With government and industry working together to rapidly grow food exports, now is the time to equip your business to tap into this worldwide opportunity. As well as the European single market, countries which represent significant food export potential include Australia & New Zealand, Mexico and Latin America, India, USA and Canada, China, Japan and the UAE & Gulf region.

Export certification made easy

For exports outside of the European Single Market, a key part of the UK Food and Drink International Action Plan 2016-2020, the Government is also looking into the option of electronic Export Health Certificates. If implemented, this will go a long way to simplifying the export process. In the meantime, at Amivet Exports we offer a full export certification process, which includes checking, completing, signing and stamping the export health certificate, and we can advise on any other required documents.
